A wrong address is not one problem — it is three, and they mean different things: a historical address you actually lived at, a garbled version of an address that is yours, or an address that belongs to someone else entirely. Sorting which one you have is the work, because each calls for a different response.

Start with what this section is. Per the CFPB's credit-report overview, it can include your name and any name you have used in connection with a credit account — including nicknames — plus current and former addresses, birth date, Social Security number and phone numbers. It is a history of identifying data, not a snapshot of your current one — which is why old addresses appear at all.

The least alarming explanation is the most common one to rule out: furnishers report the addresses they have, and a variant or error travels. The CFPB's stated starting point for a review is simply to check that the report contains only items about you and to look for information that is inaccurate or incomplete.
